...We read tomes on the work of the Holy Spirit when... five minutes of drastic obedience would make things clear as a sunbeam. We say, "I suppose I shall understand these things some day." You can understand them now: it is not study that does it, but obedience. The tiniest fragment of obedience, and heaven opens up and the profoundest truths of God are yours straight away. God will never reveal more truth about Himself till you obey what you know already.~Oswald Chambers
Okay, first things first- "Tomes" means (quite literally) "Large, scholarly books." Just thought I'd throw that in for free... ;-) Now, as I was reading this quote to Mom she commented that it's the same truth as Psalm 119:105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." Because when one has a lamp, or a candle, or a lantern, and they're standing on a dark path, there's only a small area around them that is illuminated. As long as that person stands still, that small area is all they will ever see.
If they say "There might be a cliff just beyond the light," or "I can't see far enough to know where I'm going," then they could very easily be stuck for ever. Until they take a step forward, the light is not going to show them anything new.
Step forward in obedience, and watch the light show you greater, more beautiful things. If it shows you a cliff, it will also show you a different path, or maybe even a bridge, because our Savior will not lead us where we are not able to go.
Follow the light of God's word, let it lead you step by step, and watch "heaven open up" to you as God leads in toward His perfect will.
