As I was sitting in music theory class today, attempting to conquer the complex counterpoint exercises my teacher had written on the board, I thought about the many composers whose music I’ve played. THEY WERE GENIUSES!!!!! I never really thought about how much work went into composing. There are so many rules and teeny tiny details; it’s amazing how they didn’t go crazy in the midst of composing a 30-page concerto!!! I know I would have!!! Composers spend endless hours working just to make their piece perfect, and I have come to appreciate the time and effort they put into the compositions.

However, it can be very easy to ruin the beautiful story of a musical piece. Just a few wrong notes and an altered rhythm can put a masterpiece to shame. Similarly, I cannot take out a sonata by Bach, rearrange all the notes, and expect for it to sound just as exquisite as the original. Nor can I listen to a sonata and then immediately, without music, play it the same way.
The composer has a purpose for his music. It’s written a certain way for a reason. We are to follow what they have written if we want to produce the intended musical sound. A composer’s musical piece is a story. It’s a story we shouldn’t try to ruin by doing our “own thing.” It won’t be the same.
In the same way, God is the Composer of life. He has had our lives written out for us since before the beginning of time. While it may be difficult and confusing at times, we are to follow Him. It can be easy to try and alter circumstances so they work in our favor. But just a few wrong decisions can ruin part of the song the Great Composer has composed for us. HIS ways are much better than OUR ways.
God has a wonderful plan for each and every one of our lives. I continually pray that instead of trying to make things work MY way, I would learn to be content and joyful in the song God made *just* for me. :)
